Japan Restoration Party Leader Signals Support for Koizumi, Takaichi in LDP Presidential Race
TOKYO – Japan Restoration Party leader Yoshimura Hirofumi publicly identified Agriculture Minister Koizumi Shinjiro adn former Minister of Economic Security Takaichi Sanae as potential candidates to lead the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), following Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru’s recent resignation proclamation.Yoshimura shared his assessment during a live appearance on TBS’s Hiruobi program on September 19th.
The upcoming LDP presidential election is crucial for determining japan’s political direction as the nation faces numerous challenges. Yoshimura stated he seeks a leader committed to genuine reform and building a stronger Japan. When pressed by host Honjamaka Megumi Toshiaki to choose from the five declared candidates, Yoshimura initially deflected, calling it a “fastball” question. He then highlighted Koizumi as “a very reformist” and Takaichi as a “policy expert,” emphasizing the strengths of both individuals.
Yoshimura also acknowledged the other candidates – former Minister of Economic Security Kobayashi Takayuki, former Secretary General Mogi Toshimitsu, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa - stating, “I think everyone is unique and excellent.” However, he admitted to having limited personal interaction with Kobayashi.
During the program,Yoshimura revealed he had previously dined with two of the five candidates,identifying Koizumi – with whom he inspected the Osaka-Kansai Expo – and Mogi. He declined to elaborate further on his conversations with either individual.
