WhatsApp to Introduce Edit Feature, Bringing it in line with Competitors
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – October 4, 2024 – WhatsApp is rolling out a long-awaited feature allowing users to edit sent messages, a capability already widely available on rival messaging platforms like Telegram, Signal, and iMessage. The update, announced today, begins a phased rollout to all users globally and addresses a frequent request from the app’s two billion+ user base.
For years, WhatsApp users have been limited to deleting messages for everyone, a solution that leaves a visible gap in the conversation. The new edit function provides a more seamless correction method for typos or mistakenly sent information. This move positions WhatsApp more competitively within the messaging landscape and enhances the user experience by offering greater control over dialogue.
The edit feature allows users to modify messages within 15 minutes of sending them. edited messages will display an “edited” label, informing recipients that changes have been made. WhatsApp confirmed the 15-minute window is a deliberate choice to balance user convenience with the need to preserve message history and context.
“We’re always working to improve the experience within WhatsApp,” a spokesperson stated. “The ability to edit messages is a highly requested feature, and we’re excited to bring it to our users.”
The rollout is currently underway and will reach all users in the coming days. WhatsApp, owned by meta, continues to add features aimed at enhancing privacy and usability, solidifying its position as a leading global messaging service.
