New York, NY – August 11, 2025 – New York Yankees pitcher max Fried acknowledged his recent struggles following a loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday, August 10th, at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees, currently battling for a wild card spot, need a turnaround from their $218 million ace.
Fried, 29, suffered his fifth loss of the season, allowing four earned runs over five innings against the Astros. This performance continues a concerning trend: as July 1st, Fried has a 6.00 ERA across seven starts, with the Yankees posting a 2-5 record in those games. The Astros won the game 6-3, with Cam Smith driving in two runs on the double against Fried.
Entering Monday’s games, the Yankees hold a narrow half-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox for the final American League wild card berth. The team’s record currently stands at 72-55.
“You go through spells sometimes, but to be honest, I just have to be better,” Fried stated, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. “I just got to be better at locating, being able to get more ground balls, and I haven’t been able to do that. It’s something I need to dive into and see what adjustments I can make.”
Prior to july, Fried had only surrendered four or more earned runs in a single start once this season. He has now exceeded that threshold in four of his last seven outings, and has allowed multiple earned runs in each of those seven starts. His season ERA remains a respectable 2.85, but the recent downturn is raising concerns.
