On April 6, 2022, Yahoo! JAPAN ceased offering most of its services to users located within the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom, a change the company attributed to difficulties in maintaining a consistent service environment across those regions.
The decision impacted a wide range of Yahoo! JAPAN’s offerings, with the exception of a limited number of services, including Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Card and ebookjapan. However, even access to Yahoo! Mail was subject to certain functional restrictions, details of which were provided in Japanese language documentation. Users with automatically renewing subscriptions, such as Yahoo! Premium, were advised to cancel their accounts.
According to a notice published by Yahoo! JAPAN, the change applied to access originating from within the EEA and the UK. Services remained accessible to users physically located in Japan. The company apologized for the inconvenience caused by the service withdrawal.
The move, first announced earlier in 2022, signaled a broader trend of Japanese tech companies reassessing their international reach. While Yahoo! JAPAN remains a dominant force within its domestic market, its presence outside of Japan has been limited. Archyde reported the change in April 2022, noting the limitations experienced by users in the affected regions.
The company did not specify the precise nature of the difficulties encountered in maintaining services within the EEA and UK, but the decision reflects increasing complexities related to data privacy regulations and cross-border data transfer requirements. The cessation of services occurred at 11:00 AM Japan Standard Time on April 6, 2022.
As of February 10, 2026, Yahoo! JAPAN has not announced any plans to reinstate services in the EEA or the UK.
