Xiaomi & Mandatory Insurance: New Sales Strategy

Xiaomi has launched its “Xiaomi Care” insurance program in Italy, Germany, France and Spain, offering protection against accidental damage and theft for its smartphones. The program, developed in collaboration with Allianz Assistance, provides two distinct insurance packages, both valid for 24 months, and can be purchased at the time of a new device purchase or within 30 days after, according to a company statement released August 12, 2024.

The “Accidental Damage” package covers damage caused by liquids, drops, impacts, and shocks. The “Accidental Damage and Theft” package expands coverage to include protection against robbery and burglary. Both packages allow for up to two repair requests within a 12-month period and one request for replacement or reimbursement within a 24-month period.

A maximum franchise, or deductible, applies in the event of a claim. For devices priced between €1,701 and €2,100, the maximum franchise is €165 for damage claims. For theft claims, the maximum franchise is €290 for devices in the same price range. The franchise amount decreases based on the original list price of the device, according to Xiaomi.

Xiaomi Care aims to provide consumers with greater peace of mind regarding their mobile technology investments. The program offers the use of 100% original spare parts for repairs, performed by highly qualified engineers at authorized service centers. Claims can be submitted online 24/7 through the eClaim portal.

The launch of Xiaomi Care mirrors a strategy adopted by other technology companies, such as Apple, which also offers extended warranty and insurance options for its products. Xiaomi’s move comes as the smartphone market faces increasing competition and a need to offer added value to consumers.
