Xbox Leadership Changes: Sharma Takes Helm, Bond Departs | News & Interviews

Asha Sharma has been named CEO of Microsoft Gaming, succeeding Phil Spencer, who is retiring after nearly four decades with the company, Microsoft announced Friday. The leadership shift was accompanied by the resignation of Xbox President Sarah Bond, a move that surprised many within the industry.

Spencer, who began his career at Microsoft as an intern in 1988 and became CEO of Microsoft Gaming in 2022, will work with Sharma to ensure a smooth transition, according to a company statement. Sharma previously served as Microsoft’s CoreAI product president. Her appointment marks a significant change in leadership for the gaming division, as she comes from an artificial intelligence background, sparking debate among fans regarding her gaming credentials.

Bond’s departure was announced within Spencer’s statement, described as a decision to “begin a new chapter.” Spencer acknowledged Bond’s instrumental role in shaping Xbox’s platform strategy, expanding Game Pass and cloud gaming, and guiding the launch of new hardware. “I’m grateful for her partnership and the impact she’s had, and I wish her the very best in what comes next,” Spencer said.

Neither Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, nor Matt Booty, who was promoted to chief content officer as part of the restructuring, publicly addressed Bond’s resignation in their initial statements. Booty stated that there were “no organizational changes underway for our studios,” attempting to quell concerns about broader upheaval within Xbox.

The timing of these changes comes after a challenging period for Xbox, marked by layoffs, declining sales, and increasing development costs. Sharma, in a statement following her appointment, acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “This team has brought it back before, and I’m here to support us do it again.”

Bond had become a more public-facing figure in recent years, particularly in relation to initiatives like Xbox Play Anywhere and the ROG Xbox Ally, as well as the development of the next-generation Xbox console. A direct replacement for Bond has not yet been announced, and the role of ‘Xbox President’ may be evolving given the new executive vice president titles held by both Sharma, and Booty.

Online reaction to the leadership changes has been mixed, with some fans expressing concern over Sharma’s lack of traditional gaming experience. Some fans publicly scrutinized Sharma’s Xbox Gamertag, noting a limited recent play history. Industry analyst Jez Corden suggested Sharma’s background in AI and experience at companies like Meta may have been key factors in her selection, given the evolving competitive landscape of the gaming industry.
