xbox Launches Cloud Gaming in India for game Pass Subscribers
Microsoft has launched Xbox cloud Gaming in India, making its extensive library of games accessible to Xbox Game Pass subscribers without requiring dedicated gaming hardware. This marks a meaningful step in bringing AAA gaming to a wider audience in the country, though challenges related to network infrastructure remain.
The launch positions Xbox as a major player in India’s emerging cloud gaming market, competing with existing services like JioGamesCloud (offered by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd in partnership with Krafton, the maker of Battlegrounds Mobile India) and OnePlay.Though, xbox boasts a considerable advantage with its catalog of games developed by its gaming studio subsidiaries – a breadth of content other firms may find tough to match.
Cloud gaming offers a perhaps more affordable entry point into high-end gaming, bypassing the significant cost of purchasing a powerful gaming PC or console. However, the Indian gaming landscape is heavily dominated by mobile gaming, presenting a challenge to the growth of console and PC-based gaming.
Acknowledging the unique demands of the Indian market, Arjun Varma, who heads Xbox’s strategic expansion in India, stated, “We have to cater to the market… What gamers in India want, what gives them value… We want to offer them choice and flexibility. They want to play across a range of devices, it’s a mobile first market.” He also noted that the availability of Xbox hardware thru authorized retailers has been subject to “market forces” for several weeks.
A key factor for successful cloud gaming is low latency – ideally under 30 milliseconds - to ensure a smooth experiance. While mobile networks (including 5G from Bharti Airtel Ltd., Vodafone Idea Ltd., and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd) often struggle to consistently achieve this due to network architecture, home fiber broadband and WiFi networks are better equipped to handle the demands. Initial testing at Xbox’s launch event in Noida showed a latency of 140ms, while one Game Pass subscriber in Mumbai reported latency as low as 22 milliseconds.
Currently, Xbox has not partnered with a telecom or internet service provider to optimize latency. Mr. Varma indicated a “phased approach” to the India launch, adding, “Our teams woudl love to work and understand how we can collaborate with partners in India.” Leaked documents from a 2020 court case revealed previous discussions between Xbox and Jio regarding cloud gaming, though a partnership did not ultimately materialize.
The launch took place on November 12, 2025.
