Game Studio Exec’s AI Job-Search Advice Backfires
Amid layoffs possibly exacerbated by AI, a game studio executive’s suggestion that departing employees use AI tools to find new jobs has sparked controversy. The message was ill-received, considering the circumstances.
Executive’s Tone-Deaf LinkedIn Post
Matt Turnbull, an executive producer at Turn 10 Studios, offered advice via LinkedIn to staff impacted by recent layoffs, including 50% of his own studio. His suggestion involved leveraging AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT.
Specifically, Turnbull recommended AI for tasks such as CV writing, LinkedIn profile optimization, and even providing emotional support to those struggling with confidence after losing their jobs. He suggested the AI act as a job coach, while adding the caveat that “no AI tool is a replacement for your voice.”
However, critics found his message sounded more like a marketing pitch for generative AI.
Backlash and Aftermath
The LinkedIn post was quickly removed following overwhelmingly negative reactions. Copies of the message circulated widely as people voiced their disapproval.
AI Impact on Job Displacement
Microsoft has significantly invested in AI, integrating it into products like Microsoft Edge and Office. Some sources attribute recent layoffs to AI potentially replacing certain roles. A 2023 study by the Brookings Institute found that approximately 6% of jobs are at high risk of being displaced by AI.
