X/Twitter Moderation Failure: User Data Reveals Decline After Musk Takeover

Dozens of potential jurors have been dismissed from the trial of Elon Musk concerning his 2022 acquisition of Twitter, now known as X, after his own attorney acknowledged that a significant number held strong negative opinions about the billionaire. The disclosures came during jury selection, raising questions about the possibility of finding an impartial jury in the case.

According to reports from The Independent and Mediaite, the dismissals occurred as prospective jurors were questioned about their biases. The attorney, Alex Spiro, reportedly conceded that “so many” potential jurors “hate him,” leading to their removal from the pool. Almost half of the initial jury pool was reportedly dismissed due to expressed animosity towards Musk, according to Mediaite.

The trial centers on allegations that Musk was misled about the number of bot accounts on the platform prior to completing the $44 billion takeover. Musk has claimed that Twitter misrepresented the prevalence of these accounts, while Twitter’s former management argues he attempted to back out of the deal due to market conditions and a change of heart.

The difficulties in jury selection highlight the intensely public nature of Musk’s ownership of X and the controversies surrounding his decisions since the acquisition. The platform, rebranded as X, has seen significant changes in content moderation policies, leading to concerns about the spread of misinformation and hate speech. A recent report from New York Magazine suggests that X is “pulling users to the right,” indicating a shift in the platform’s user base and content ecosystem.

Adding to the legal challenges facing Musk and X, French investigators recently raided the company’s Paris offices, according to Sky News. The raids are reportedly linked to investigations into suspected failures to comply with European Union digital services regulations. The nature of these regulations and the specific allegations remain unclear.

Jury selection continues in Delaware, with the court working to identify individuals who can fairly assess the evidence presented in the case. The trial’s outcome could have significant financial implications for Musk and X, as well as set precedents for future mergers and acquisitions involving social media platforms.
