Wyoming History & Pride: A Look at the State & University

Marilyn Kite, former Chief Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court, recently authored an opinion piece emphasizing the value of Wyoming’s history and its state university. Kite served on the Wyoming Supreme Court from 2000 until her retirement in 2015, and as Chief Justice from 2010 to 2014. Kite’s career reflects a series of firsts for women in Wyoming’s legal system. She was the first woman to hold the position of Chief Justice in the state, a milestone noted in a 2010 announcement by the Laramie Boomerang. Her path to the bench began with studies at the University of Wyoming College of Law, following in the footsteps of previous generations of her family. she is a second-generation University of Wyoming graduate and a third-generation Wyoming citizen. Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court by Governor Jim Geringer, Kite practiced law as a natural resources trial attorney at Holland & Hart, and raised her family in Jackson, Wyoming. An oral history interview conducted in 2022 details her experiences navigating these different facets of her life and career. The Wyoming Supreme Court recognized Kite’s contributions with a retirement announcement in March 2015, acknowledging her more than 14 years of service. Current Chief Justice E. James Burke lauded her distinguished tenure on the court. Kite’s legal background and commitment to Wyoming’s institutions are reflected in her recent commentary, which highlights the state’s unique heritage and the importance of its flagship university. She continues to write and engage with issues relevant to Wyoming.
