Wyoming Defeats Air Force 28-14 Amid Falcons Turnovers and Injuries

October 24, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Air Force lost 28-14 to Wyoming at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie on Friday, October 23, 2026, falling behind early and committing three fumbles and multiple costly penalties in a Mountain West Conference game.

The loss marked Wyoming’s sixth straight home victory in the series. Air Force entered the matchup carrying a four-game winning streak and a reputation for clean, disciplined play. That identity vanished under the Friday night lights in Wyoming, according to reporting.

How Unfamiliar Flaws Undermined the Falcons

The visiting team’s usual execution broke down across multiple quarters. Air Force had not fumbled a single time across 554 plays dating back to the previous season. In Laramie, the Falcons lost three fumbles.

Penalties proved equally damaging for an offense that typically avoids them. The least penalized team in the Mountain West watched multiple flags wipe out big gains in the red zone. One erased penalty nullified what would have been a game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. Those red-zone possessions yielded just three total points for an offense that started the night ranked 15th nationally in converting red-zone trips into touchdowns.

Receiver Jonah Dawson dropped a perfectly thrown ball from backup quarterback Josh Johnson in the fourth quarter on another potential tying touchdown play. Right tackle Luke Vonderhaar pointed directly inward when assessing the offensive struggles. “Too many turnovers, too many miss assignments, too many bad blocks,” Vonderhaar said. “I think it was just all on ourselves.”

Linebacker Blake Fletcher shared that blunt assessment of the team’s performance. “We didn’t play Air Force football tonight,” Fletcher said.

Quarterback Evan Medders Leaves Game with Injury

Air Force absorbed another heavy blow when quarterback Evan Medders left the game after the third quarter. Medders was making his third start in place of the injured Liam Szarka. Before departing, Medders rushed for 115 yards on 21 carries, scored a two-point conversion on a second-effort run, and completed three of four passes for 27 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Grant Wayne.

Coach Troy Calhoun stated after the game that Medders sustained an injury that was “not a fracture,” though he could not provide a definitive timeline or further details. “We’ll find out what’s involved,” Calhoun said. “That’s as much as I know right now.”

Josh Johnson stepped in for Medders but lost two fumbles. Freshman quarterback Howard Fisher IV finished out the contest.

Defensively, the Falcons struggled to contain Wyoming’s Tyler Hughes. After successfully limiting mobile signal-callers in previous weeks, Air Force surrendered a 68-yard touchdown run to Hughes on the second play of the game. Hughes finished the first half with 109 rushing yards and 109 passing yards, throwing two touchdowns. His second-effort scramble and escape from multiple tackle attempts set up the touchdown with 3 minutes, 4 seconds remaining.

Wyoming built a 21-6 halftime lead, capped by an eight-yard hook-and-ladder touchdown where Samuel Harris took a pitch after Eric Richardson caught a short pass. Air Force dominated the third quarter by running 25 of the frame’s 28 plays, but could not bridge the gap before the final whistle.
