Wuppertal‘s iconic suspension railway was targeted Tuesday evening by vandals who damaged two cars, reportedly with stones.
Police responded to reports of broken windows and damaged doors, promptly launching a search of the area around the Alten Markt and a nearby parking garage. No arrests have been made, though several individuals were questioned, according to a police spokesperson. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The incident briefly halted all service on the historic Schwebebahn, but operations have since resumed.
Authorities initially investigated reports of possible bullet holes, but now believe the damage was caused by stones or a slingshot. A severely damaged window posed an immediate safety risk, prompting the temporary suspension of service. The Wuppertal police department continues it’s investigation into the incident and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
The wuppertaler Schwebebahn, opened in 1901, is a celebrated landmark and a vital part of the city’s public transportation network, carrying millions of passengers annually. Vandalism impacting the railway disrupts service for residents and tourists alike.
