World’s First Seaweed-Eating Machine Launches in Bay of Islands

A new autonomous vessel designed to harvest invasive seaweed has begun operations in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, marking the first deployment of the technology in a marine environment. The machine, developed by marine technology firm Kelp Harvest, is intended to curb the spread of Undaria pinnatifida, an invasive species known to displace native kelp forests and disrupt local ecosystems.

The vessel operates by scanning the seabed and using specialized suction technology to remove invasive seaweed while attempting to minimize impact on surrounding native flora. According to project engineers, the machine utilizes computer vision to distinguish between native species and the invasive Undaria, which is native to East Asia and was first identified in New Zealand waters in 1987.

The deployment follows years of research into mechanical removal methods, which local environmental groups previously argued were too labor-intensive to manage at scale. By automating the extraction process, the project aims to cover larger areas of the seabed than manual divers can reach.

The spread of Undaria has long been a concern for Northland regional authorities, as the seaweed grows rapidly and can form dense mats that shade out native species. While manual removal remains the standard practice for small-scale coastal management, the introduction of this machine offers a potential alternative for larger, more dense infestations.

Ecologists monitoring the trial in the Bay of Islands are assessing how effectively the vessel clears the invasive growth without disturbing the underlying sediment or marine life. The project is being conducted under a permit from the Department of Conservation, which requires ongoing monitoring of the site to ensure the mechanical harvesting does not inadvertently facilitate the spread of spores or cause collateral damage to the reef structure.

Next steps for the trial

The current phase of the project is a pilot study designed to test the machine’s durability in variable coastal conditions. Data collected during these initial runs will determine whether the technology is viable for broader use across other regions where Undaria has established a foothold.

The project team plans to analyze the recovery rate of native seaweed in the harvested zones over the next six months. Pending the results of this environmental impact assessment, the developers intend to seek approval for an expanded deployment schedule in the upcoming spring season.
