World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program 2027: Applications Now Open

August 18, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The World Bank Group Africa regions announced the application period for the 2027 WBG Africa Fellowship Program, targeting Sub-Saharan African nationals who are Ph.D. candidates or recent graduates. Running through August 25, 2026, the initiative provides six-month assignments at World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C. or country offices to build research and policymaking capacity.

Eligibility Criteria and Selection Parameters for 2027

Applicants must meet strict academic and age thresholds to qualify for the competitive six-month placement. According to the World Bank Group, candidates must be enrolled in the final year of a Ph.D. program or hold a doctorate completed within the last three years.

Additional criteria require candidates to be 32 years of age or younger by January 1, 2027, possess strong quantitative and analytical capabilities, and demonstrate an excellent command of both written and spoken English. Women receive explicit encouragement to apply as part of the institution’s commitment to diversity in economic research.

The selection follows a two-phase process. Phase I establishes a shortlist based on specialization needs across various bank units. Phase II involves final selections in consultation with those operational units, with successful candidates onboarded as World Bank consultants starting in January 2027.

Hands-On Operational Exposure in Washington and Country Offices

Selected fellows spend six months embedded within active lending operations, technical assistance frameworks, and macroeconomic research projects. This placement directly supports the World Bank Group goal of eliminating poverty and boosting shared prosperity across developing economies.

Participants gain first-hand exposure to institutional design, knowledge generation, and country-level policy formulation.

The pipeline has historically funneled talented scholars into roles within African governments, global think tanks, academic institutions, and international institutions.

Looking Ahead: The August 25 Deadline

With applications closing on August 25, 2026, prospective applicants must finalize submissions through the official World Bank portals before the window shuts.
