Works beginning on old Limerick garda station

Limerick’s Historic Garda Station Faces Urgent Repairs

City Center Road Closure Expected to Last Six Weeks

A significant project to stabilize and restore a landmark building in Limerick City will disrupt traffic flow for up to six weeks. The former garda station, a fixture of the city since around 1900, requires emergency construction and remedial work.

Building’s Future Secured

The disused police station, located off Mary Street, remains under the control of Limerick City and County Council after Mayor John Moran intervened to halt a planned sale. Previously, council members had voted to sell the property, but Moran determined the historic structure could be better utilized for community benefit.

The upcoming work will necessitate the closure of Meatmarket Lane between Mary Street and Sheep Street for approximately six weeks. Authorities will implement diversion routes, and the council has apologized for any inconvenience caused to commuters and residents.

Impact on Local Traffic

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to plan alternative routes during the road closure. Diversion signage will be prominently displayed to guide traffic around the affected area. The council assures the public that every effort will be made to minimize disruption and complete the essential repairs as quickly as possible.

The decision to prioritize the preservation of the building reflects a growing commitment to safeguarding Limerick’s historical landmarks. The restored station could potentially serve as a cultural center, community space, or other public amenity.
