UAlbany Hoops Welcomes Michelle Holmes as Assistant Coach
The University at Albany’s women’s basketball program has bolstered its coaching staff. They’ve hired Michelle Holmes as an assistant coach. This move signifies a strategic effort to enhance player development and build on the team’s existing culture.
Holmes’ Impressive Resume
Colleen Mullen, the head coach, expressed excitement about the addition. She cited Holmes’ background as both a standout player and coach. Mullen believes Holmes will bring considerable value to the program.

Holmes previously spent three seasons at American University. There, she oversaw post-player development, contributing to the success of players like Cecilia Kay and Emily Johns. Holmes is enthusiastic about collaborating with Coach Mullen and contributing to the team’s holistic player development approach.
According to the NCAA, the average coaching tenure for a Division I women’s basketball coach is 4.5 years, highlighting the importance of consistent staff additions and development (NCAA Research 2023).
A Look at Holmes’ Playing Career
Before coaching, Holmes worked in research from 2016 to 2018. She spent four years with the federal government before returning to her alma mater to coach. During her time as a student-athlete, Holmes led American University to its first Patriot League Championship in 2015.
She earned spots on the Patriot League Third Team and All-Tournament Team. Holmes led her team with 220 rebounds. Her single-season field-goal percentage of .643 is an AU record. Holmes also ranks third all-time in career field-goal percentage (.535).
In addition, Holmes coordinated community service and alumni events. She also acted as a liaison for housing and academic services. Holmes, a Toledo, Ohio, native, graduated from American University in 2016 with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Public Health.
