Ipoh Housewife Wins US$1.4 Million After Using Spam Call Numbers for Lottery Bet
IPOH, MALAYSIA – A housewife in Ipoh, Perak state, has won RM6,078,449 (approximately US$1.4 million) in the Da Ma Cai 1+3D lottery after using numbers gleaned from a spam phone call.
The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, reportedly noticed the digits 4526 and 3106 in her phone’s call log after receiving an unsolicited call from an unknown number. On a whim, she placed a RM2 bet on those numbers in the September 10th draw.
Her numbers were drawn, resulting in the substantial prize. Da Ma Cai officially confirmed the win on social media.
The winner has stated she intends to donate a portion of her winnings to charity.
Statistically, such a win is exceptionally rare. The incident echoes other recent lottery luck stories, including that of Paul Corcoran of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, who won US$2 million in July after accidentally purchasing two US$1 million-winning tickets. Wayne Murray of New York City also defied the odds in May 2023, winning US$10 million in a scratch-off game just 16 months after winning the same amount, a feat with odds of one in 3.5 million - accomplished twice.
