WNBA Launches “No Space for Hate” Initiative

The Women’s National Basketball Association is intensifying its battle against hate speech with a new program aimed at fostering respect online and in arenas, hoping to create a more inclusive environment for all.

Combating Hate

Spearheaded by a dedicated Task Force of league and team representatives, and with the support of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association, the WNBA’s No Space for Hate initiative addresses online and in-person abuse. The initiative emphasizes improved tech to find hateful online comments, increased security at arenas, more mental health resources, and a united stance against hate.

Unified Messaging

The league plans to display unified messaging across all teams. These messages will be shared via in-arena public service announcements, floor graphics, pre-game warm-up shirts, and across various social media platforms.

Commissioner’s Statement

Cathy Engelbert, WNBA Commissioner, stated:

As the WNBA continues to grow in popularity and influence, we’re proud to launch ‘No Space for Hate’ — a league-wide initiative to better protect players, preserve the spirit of the game, and affirm the values of our league. We believe that basketball can be a unifying force — a place where people from all walks of life come together not just to watch a game, but to connect.

Cathy Engelbert, WNBA Commissioner

She continued, We want our arenas, and our social platforms filled with energy and fandom — not hate and vitriol. That means turning our values into action: strengthening digital and physical security, expanding access to mental health resources, and unifying our message across the league. It’s our responsibility to protect what makes this sport so special and ensure we continue to inspire the next generation of women’s basketball fans.

AI-Powered Monitoring

To combat online harassment, the WNBA will deploy an AI-powered technology solution to monitor social media activity, working closely with players and teams to shield the community from hate speech. A recent study showed that AI-driven moderation can reduce online toxicity by up to 80% (Brookings, 2023).

Fan Code of Conduct

Moreover, the league is reinforcing its Fan Code of Conduct, ensuring it is more accessible via WNBA.com, the WNBA app, and various social channels. The WNBA is also reaffirming its commitment to mental health by highlighting available resources for players, their families, and team and league staff. Furthermore, all teams and the league will place increased emphasis on security measures.

League Commitment

The No Space for Hate platform showcases the WNBA’s dedication to its players and its commitment to inclusion, respect, and unity. This initiative highlights the league’s dedication to leading with purpose, both on and off the court.
