Some Windows 10 and Windows 11 users are reporting unexpected BitLocker recovery prompts following a recent update. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is working on a resolution.
According to Microsoft, the bug does not result in data loss, provided users have access to thier BitLocker recovery key. Systems return to normal operation once the key is entered. The company is developing a fix to address the abnormal behavior triggered by the update.
For system administrators, Microsoft recommends utilizing Known Issue Rollback (KIR) group policies to revert the problematic update elements. These policies facilitate remote rollbacks without requiring system reinstallation or data loss.
Recent History of BitLocker Issues
This isn’t the first time a Windows update has triggered BitLocker recovery requests. A similar incident occurred in May 2025, as reported by Clubic, when Patch Tuesday caused BitLocker recoveries on Windows 10 systems.
With Microsoft enabling BitLocker encryption by default on all Windows 11 editions, securely storing your recovery key is now more critical than ever.
Workarounds & Next steps
While awaiting Microsoft’s official fix, affected users can temporarily resolve the issue by manually entering their BitLocker recovery key. Alternatively, disabling BitLocker on the machine is another potential workaround.
