Windows 11’s Shared Audio Feature: Play Music on Two Bluetooth Devices at Once

June 1, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Microsoft has quietly rolled out a new feature in Windows 11 that transforms how users share audio wirelessly—allowing two sets of Bluetooth headphones or earbuds to stream the same content simultaneously from a single PC. Dubbed Shared Audio, the functionality mirrors Apple’s AirPods sharing capability but arrives after years of consumer frustration over Windows’ rigid one-device-per-stream limitation.

The update, detailed in Microsoft’s official Windows OS Platform blog on May 26, 2026, marks the first time Windows 11 has enabled multi-stream Bluetooth audio natively. The feature is powered by Bluetooth LE Audio, a standard introduced in 2020 that supports simultaneous connections to multiple audio devices. Until now, Windows users could only pair one set of headphones at a time, forcing awkward workarounds like splitting a single earbud or relying on wired alternatives.

Microsoft confirmed the rollout in a statement to Windows Latest, noting that Shared Audio is being deployed gradually via Windows 11 build 26200.8524 (part of the 25H2 and 26H1 updates). Users with compatible hardware—primarily PCs and Bluetooth devices manufactured in 2020 or later—will find the toggle in the Quick Settings panel (accessed via the speaker icon in the taskbar). Once enabled, the system lists all paired Bluetooth devices, allowing users to select two outputs for shared playback.

The feature’s arrival addresses a long-standing gap in Windows’ audio ecosystem, particularly for collaborative use cases. As Microsoft’s Steven Ilami, a principal program manager for Windows, described in the blog post, the limitation stemmed from Bluetooth Classic Audio’s design, which restricted single-stream outputs. “We watch movies with family, study with classmates, and share Windows together,” Ilami wrote. “Shared Audio lets two people listen to the same content wirelessly—through their own headphones—without disturbing others.”

Industry observers highlight the move as both a technical and competitive response. While Apple’s iOS and macOS have supported multi-device audio sharing for years, Windows users have historically relied on third-party software or hardware hacks to achieve similar functionality. The update also aligns with broader trends in wireless audio, where LE Audio’s adoption—now standard in most modern Bluetooth chips—has created the infrastructure for such features.

However, adoption may face practical hurdles. Not all Bluetooth devices support LE Audio, and Microsoft has not specified a timeline for universal compatibility. Users without the latest Windows updates or older hardware may remain excluded. The company has not disclosed whether Shared Audio will extend to other Microsoft platforms, such as Xbox or Surface devices.

For now, the feature remains a niche but notable step toward bridging Windows’ historical lag in wireless audio innovation. Its rollout underscores Microsoft’s focus on incremental yet high-impact improvements—particularly in areas where Apple has long held an edge.
