Microsoft is set to discontinue support for its Windows 11 operating system, primarily targeted at the education sector, by October 2026. This decision marks a meaningful development in the company’s approach to operating systems, particularly in its efforts to compete within educational technology markets.

Microsoft Ends Windows 11 Support

The Windows 11 operating system will cease to receive support from Microsoft starting in October 2026. The upcoming Windows 11, version 24H2, will not be available for this specific system, and Microsoft will halt the provision of technical support and crucial security updates next year. While computers running Windows 11 will continue to function after this date, Microsoft strongly advises users to migrate to a different windows edition to ensure ongoing software support and security patches. Although not officially confirmed, Linux is being considered as a potential choice to prevent the obsolescence of these devices.

Microsoft’s objective with Windows 11 was to deliver a simple and secure operating system. Unlike its predecessor, Windows 10S, which was also education-focused but restricted request installations to the Microsoft Store, Windows 11 permitted the use of third-party software, provided it was approved by administrators. Microsoft implemented several adjustments in Windows 11, making it similar to its previous iteration. By default, applications open in full-screen mode, and the system supports a maximum of two windows displayed side-by-side. Widgets were removed to minimize distractions.

Several manufacturers, including Asus, Acer, and Dell, embraced this concept. Microsoft also introduced the Surface Laptop SE, whose primary advantage was its affordability, making it competitive with similar offerings on other operating systems.
