Windows 11: Emergency Update Fixes Broken Microsoft Apps

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Microsoft has released an emergency update to address a critical issue affecting several of its core applications, including Teams, Office, OneDrive, and Outlook. The disruption, triggered by the company’s latest security update, left users unable to access online features within these programs.

The fix, designated “2026-03 Update (KB5085516) (26200.8039),” was identified by Windows Latest as a response to “major issues affecting internet connectivity in some apps” following the rollout of March’s mandatory security fixes. While Microsoft has categorized the update as optional, targeting only users experiencing connectivity problems, it is not being automatically downloaded. Affected users must manually initiate the installation.

According to Microsoft, the update incorporates previous security and non-security releases alongside a specific resolution for the connectivity issue. Windows Latest reports the download process takes approximately five minutes, with installation requiring an additional five to seven minutes, dependent on internet speed and hardware performance.

The initial March Windows update, designed to deliver security enhancements and feature improvements, was automatically installed, even though it ultimately caused the connectivity problems for some users. The issue does not impact enterprise users who utilize enterprise-grade account sign-ins. Although, those accessing Microsoft apps through personal Microsoft Accounts are potentially affected.

Beyond the aforementioned applications, reports indicate that the bug extends to other Microsoft products, including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Copilot. The issue does not prevent the applications from opening, but rather disrupts access to online functionalities. Windows Latest noted multiple reports suggesting the bug impacts the Windows Store and Feedback Hub as well.

Microsoft provides resources for checking for and installing Windows updates on its support website, detailing the process for both Windows 11 and Windows 10. As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates for Windows 10, recommending users migrate to Windows 11. The current release of Windows 11 is the 2025 Update, Version 25H2.
