Worldwide Explores Expansion of ‘Wicked‘ Film Universe Following Blockbuster Success
LOS ANGELES, CA – Riding high on the success of Wicked: Part one – For Good, Universal Pictures is actively considering future projects set within the world of Oz, according to recent statements from studio executives and key creatives. The two-part film adaptation, directed by Jon M.Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide as of publication.
Universal’s Chief Marketing Officer, Michael Moses, stated, “Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe.” He confirmed that while plans are not yet finalized, “there are things underway.”
While the Broadway musical provides a complete narrative for Glinda and elphaba, the studio has options to draw from the original source material: author Gregory Maguire’s four Wicked novels. Wicked lyricist and composer stephen Schwarz noted,”The Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete-but there are other aspects that could be explored.” he revealed discussions with Winnie holzman, writer of both the musical and films, about a project that is “not a sequel, but an adjunct.”
Maguire’s sequels - Son of a Witch (2005), A Lion Among Men (2008), and out of Oz (2011) – offer potential storylines. Son of a Witch and Out of Oz focus on Elphaba’s descendants, while A Lion Among Men is narrated from the viewpoint of the Fearful Lion, portrayed in the film by Colman Domingo.
Senior Media Analyst at Comscore,Paul Dergarabedian, emphasized the franchise’s potential, stating,”It would be a wicked mistake to not endeavor to expand the great and powerful Wicked film universe…Hollywood adaptations of Broadway musicals have had mixed results…but with the Wicked franchise, the filmmakers and studio have cracked the code.” he concluded, ”There are few worlds that the Wicked brand cannot conquer.”
