Quebec Wildlife Foundation Marks Over $100 Million Invested in Conservation Efforts
Montreal, QC – The quebec Wildlife Foundation (FWQ) has surpassed a significant milestone, investing over $100 million in more than 6,000 projects dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of wildlife habitats across Quebec since its inception. The institution is a key driver in safeguarding the province’s biodiversity through targeted initiatives and collaborative partnerships.
The FWQ’s funding prioritizes several critical areas, including the development and restoration of aquatic ecosystems – marshes, ponds, and woodlands – alongside riparian planting and wetland creation. A core focus remains the protection of habitats vital for vulnerable and threatened species, and ensuring connectivity between fragmented wildlife areas. The Foundation also actively promotes forest management practices that prioritize wildlife needs.
Recent projects demonstrate the breadth of the FWQ’s impact. Advanced geomatic tools are being utilized to assess habitat quality for moose across Quebec’s 63 ZECs (Zones d’exploitation contrôlée), providing managers with data-driven insights for sustainable resource use. Furthermore, the Foundation developed an orientation plan for three deer confinement areas within the laurentides private forest, identifying challenges and outlining strategies to improve forest components utilized by Virginia deer. On Isle-aux-Grues, FWQ support is bolstering wildlife, tourism, and economic activities while together protecting the island’s ecological integrity through improved sustainable hunting practices.
Beyond direct habitat work, the FWQ disseminates crucial knowledge through specialized guides for professionals, covering species like the Spruce Grouse, Canada Goose, and American Hare, and detailing forest practices that benefit habitat quality.
“Supporting the Quebec Wildlife Foundation is investing directly in the health of our habitats and our fauna,” states Jean-Claude d’Amours, President and CEO of the Foundation. “Together, let us make Quebec’s natural wealth remain a pride and a heritage to share.”
