Yamaha faces a critical juncture in retaining Fabio Quartararo, the 2021 MotoGP world Champion,as his future hinges on demonstrable improvements too the team’s performance. The pressure is mounting after a winless streak extending back to the 2022 Portuguese Grand Prix at Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, where he secured his last victory.

Quartararo finished second in the 2022 championship standings, 8 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, but has struggled since. Yamaha’s lack of competitive pace has been a notable concern, and the rider’s continued commitment depends on tangible progress. The introduction of a new V4 engine, currently under development at Yamaha’s headquarters in Iwata, Japan, is seen as a potential turning point. However, the timeline for its completion and deployment remains a key factor.Yamaha Motor Racing Managing Director, Lin Jarvis, has publicly acknowledged the need for substantial upgrades to appease Quartararo and other key riders.

The Frenchman’s decision to remain with Yamaha in 2024, despite the team’s shortcomings, was a testament to his loyalty and belief in the project. However, replicating that faith requires concrete evidence of recovery. Without a significant performance boost, it is increasingly likely that Quartararo will explore opportunities with rival manufacturers, possibly including Ducati, KTM, or Aprilia, when his current contract expires at the end of the 2024 season.
