Weekly smartphone restarts are recommended by cybersecurity experts to enhance device performance and mitigate vulnerabilities, according to reports from two Middle Eastern outlets. The advice, cited by Lebanon 24 and Al-Watan, emphasizes that regular reboots can address software glitches and reduce exposure to potential cyber threats.

Atech specialist quoted in Lebanon 24 stated that restarting devices weekly clears temporary files and resets background processes, which can slow systems over time. The expert also noted that this practice helps ensure updates are fully implemented, a claim corroborated by a separate analysis from Al-Watan, which highlighted the role of reboots in preventing memory leaks that could be exploited by malicious actors.

Both outlets referenced a 2023 study by a cybersecurity firm based in Dubai, which found that devices restarted at least once a week experienced a 34% reduction in system crashes compared to those not regularly rebooted. The study, which analyzed data from 1,200 users across the Gulf region, also noted a 22% lower incidence of malware detection among participants who followed the weekly restart protocol.

Industry analysts caution that while routine reboots offer practical benefits, they are not a substitute for comprehensive security measures. “This is a maintenance step, not a security solution,” said a representative from a Riyadh-based IT consultancy, adding that users should also employ encrypted messaging apps and avoid downloading unverified software.
