Intel Nova Lake Desktop CPUs Aim for 52 Cores and 700W Power Limit

Intel’s upcoming Nova Lake desktop and laptop processors, anticipated as the Core Ultra Series 4, are slated for launch later this year under the leadership of CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who confirmed the timeline during the company’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call. Designed to challenge AMD’s high-end gaming and desktop processors, the next-generation architecture brings substantial overhauls to Intel’s silicon lineup across both client segments.

Desktop Core Configurations and Architecture

The flagship Nova Lake desktop silicon, designated as NVL-K or NVL-S, relies on a dual-compute-tile configuration that scales up to 52 cores in its maxed-out version, according to details reported by Tom’s Hardware. That top-end setup integrates 16 Coyote Cove performance cores, 32 Arctic Wolf efficiency cores, and four low-power island cores, supported by up to 288 megabytes of big last-level cache, or bLLC, offering 128 megabytes per tile. Mid-range and entry configurations scale down accordingly, with reports noting that Core Ultra 7 models feature 42 cores, while Core Ultra 5 variants offer up to 28 cores. Mobile processors within the Nova Lake family are rumored to top out at 28 cores on a single compute tile, as detailed by Tom’s Hardware.

Power Consumption and Thermal Limits

According to leaks from hardware tipsters cited by Tom’s Hardware, Intel’s top-end unlocked desktop SKU can reach up to 700 watts of power consumption for short bursts in its PL4 state, which serves as the hard electrical limit designed to protect the processor. The outgoing Core Ultra 9 285K features a maximum power limit of 490 watts. In addition, leaker Jaykhin reported that Nova Lake will not allow users to offset TJMax—the maximum safe operating temperature—or disable thermal throttling, with operational temperatures expected to hover near the 105-degree Celsius threshold seen in Arrow Lake.

Platform Specifications and Memory Support

Nova Lake processors will transition to Intel’s new LGA 1954 socket paired with 900-series motherboard chipsets, offering backwards compatibility for CPU coolers designed for LGA 1851, according to Tom’s Hardware. Reports state that the platform will natively support DDR5 memory speeds ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 megatransfers per second, alongside 48 PCIe lanes—including 24 PCIe 5 lanes—and expanded USB and SATA connectivity. While Intel’s Panther Lake notebook processors utilize the 18A semiconductor node, Nova Lake desktop CPUs will rely on TSMC’s N2 process.
