Why Law Firm Work Experience Must Be Meaningful, Not Passive
In July, Paragon Costs Solutions in Bristol hosted five students from schools across Bristol and Bath for a structured work experience week designed to replace passive observation with active professional engagement, featuring client pitches, contract reviews, and court hearings.
Moving Away From the Passive Observer Model
Thinking back to 1999 when managing director Nicholas Lee undertook work experience, the routine involved making tea, collecting lunch, and watching others work. That passive exercise left him as a silent observer for two of five scheduled days before he simply stopped attending. Experience shaped how individuals conduct themselves as lawyers and leaders, prompting a deliberate operational shift in his firm.
Lee argues that if young people are asked to invest time in understanding the legal profession, firms must provide meaningful opportunities for engagement. Paragon Costs has run its structured work experience programme for three consecutive years, targeting state schools with a high population of disadvantaged pupils to remove socio-economic barriers.
Practical Exercises and Real-World Legal Scenarios
During the July programme, participating students tackled hands-on assignments rather than sitting on the sidelines. They prepared and delivered a 10-minute client pitch to a real client, requiring them to understand the firm, the client, and cultural alignment.
The curriculum pushed participants into unfamiliar territory:
- Undertaking job interviews by preparing for specific fee-earning and non-fee-earning roles within a law firm, interviewing each other, and providing peer feedback.
- Reviewing fictitious commercial contracts under a tight 30-minute deadline, successfully identifying contradictory and unfair terms such as a default interest rate of 50%.
- Preparing closing submissions for a criminal trial based on witness summaries to argue whether a defendant was guilty or not.
- Debating the critical support functions that enable a law firm to operate effectively alongside lawyers.
- Attending an employment tribunal hearing and two serious trials in the Crown Court, which inspired several students to return to observe live cases the following week.
Developing Transferable Professional Skills
Beyond technical legal tasks, the students had to think independently, present to unfamiliar audiences, defend their reasoning, and operate outside their comfort zones. Nicholas Lee noted that these skills underpin success in any professional environment, whether participants ultimately become future employees, future opponents, or pursue careers outside the law.
While programmes of this nature do not generate direct fees or win new business, they offer community impact and help develop the next generation of talent.
