Why Company Cars Beat Remote Work in Switzerland Job Market

November 5, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Swiss Job Seekers Value Company Cars Over Remote Work Flexibility

Job seekers in Switzerland are willing to accept a salary reduction of slightly more than 10% to secure a company car, according to a study by the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich. The findings, reported Wednesday by Tages-Anzeiger, place vehicular perks above remote working arrangements in such a large-scale evaluation of the Swiss labor market.

Based on the Swiss median salary, that 10% wage sacrifice amounts to roughly 640 francs per month. That figure closely mirrors the estimated cost of a private leasing agreement, including insurance and maintenance, for a compact or mid-range vehicle. The research tracked approximately 265,000 individuals across 112 online employment platforms over a three-month period, examining more than 12 million decisions ranging from initial clicks to completed job applications.

Remote Work Ranks Second Among Workplace Benefits

Working from home claims the second position on the list of candidate preferences. Candidates attribute a value to remote work equivalent to slightly more than 8% of their salary, which translates to about 510 francs per month. Direct financial assistance follows closely behind, including employer contributions toward childcare costs and guaranteed parking spaces.

Conversely, several perks traditionally emphasized in job advertisements fail to generate measurable interest among applicants. Canteen subsidies, meal vouchers, professional coaching, health promotion initiatives, and flexible working hours show no discernible impact on application rates.

Company Health Services Deter Potential Candidates

Certain workplace offerings actively discourage job seekers from submitting applications. Job postings that mention an occupational health physician record significantly fewer clicks, as reported by Tages-Anzeiger and referenced in the 20 Minuten coverage. Researchers suggest that candidates interpret the presence of an on-site workplace doctor as an indicator of an environment that might prove physically or mentally demanding.

Additional coverage from 24heures.ch corroborates that financial incentives and tangible perks dominate candidate priorities while traditional wellness measures fall flat. In an environment marked by a persistent shortage of skilled labor, symbolic benefits no longer suffice to fill open positions.

Companies attempting to attract qualified personnel must instead focus on concrete financial advantages. Whether through company vehicles, direct childcare subsidies, or elevated base pay, employers face mounting pressure to restructure compensation packages to meet actual candidate demands.

The study represents the largest field experiment ever conducted on the Swiss labor market, combining real-world platform data with salary statistics and benefit information provided by Kununu. Total candidate decisions evaluated across the three-month observation window exceeded 12 million data points.
