Why Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend Mixes Politics and Pleasure

RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO – Brandi ⁤Carlile’s all-female and non-binary festival, ⁢”Girls Just Wanna Weekend,” will return to‌ Mexico’s Barceló Maya Resort January 15th-19th, 2026, for its seventh year. What began as a response ‌to the‌ lack of women headliners at mainstream music festivals⁢ has evolved into⁢ a unique event blending ‍political engagement⁢ with personal connection.

the 2026 festival⁣ roster includes CMAT, Joy Oladokun, Jensen McRae, Lucius, Jasmine.4.t, August‍ Ponthier, SistaStrings, Autumn‍ Nicholas, Arroba Nat, ⁣The Carlile Family Band, The Marshgrass Mamas, and a special “Titans of Americana”⁣ set, alongside comedian Kristin Key.

Attendees ⁣describe the ⁣festival‍ as entering “the Brandi bubble,” a sentiment amplified by current political realities. following the⁤ inauguration‍ of a new management perceived as less supportive of women’s rights and LGBTQ+ freedoms,‌ the festival offers ⁤a⁤ space for both ‌escape and activism.⁤ Carlile has previously acknowledged ‌this tension, stating it’s ⁣”not a check your feelings‍ at the door kind of place,” and encouraging attendees to return home and advocate ‍for their communities.

A ⁣central tradition is “Brandioke,” a karaoke‍ session hosted by Carlile where she⁤ and her‌ band-including the Hanseroth twins-back fans and fellow artists performing her songs. This event is ⁤described ‌as “democracy in action,” reflecting Carlile’s ⁣belief that everyone deserves a platform. Past Brandioke performances⁢ have ‍included surprise appearances, such as a rendition of “The Story” by Holly and ⁤Jess of⁣ Lucius.
