WhatsApp to Limit Unanswered Messages in New Spam Fight
MENLO PARK,CA - October 17,2025 – Meta is implementing a new system on WhatsApp to combat teh rising tide of spam, limiting the number of messages users and businesses can send to recipients who don’t respond. The platform will begin testing a monthly cap on messages sent to contacts who haven’t reacted, a move designed to curtail unsolicited communication.
Each message sent to a new contact will count toward this monthly quota until a response is received. For exmaple, sending three unanswered messages to a new contact will consume three credits from the user’s monthly allowance. Meta has not yet publicly disclosed the specific message limits, stating that various thresholds are being tested across different countries in the coming weeks.
WhatsApp will notify users when they approach their sending limit, indicating how many messages remain before a temporary block may be applied. Meta emphasizes the restrictions are intended to impact spammers and mass message senders, not typical users.
This initiative builds on a series of anti-spam measures WhatsApp has rolled out as 2024. In July of that year, the app began capping marketing messages from businesses, followed by the introduction of an unsubscribe option in November. More recently, tests on broadcast messages were conducted in a dozen countries, including India, which boasts over 500 million WhatsApp users.
The new sending limits may coincide with the release of a feature allowing users to utilize pseudonyms rather of phone numbers, currently in beta for iOS, offering increased privacy and perhaps further protection against unwanted contact.
