WhatsApp Reverts to Classic Blue Read Receipts After User Feedback

whatsapp is rolling out a change designed to simplify a recent customization feature that inadvertently caused confusion for many users. The messaging giant is bringing back the familiar blue checkmarks for read receipts across all chat themes, addressing concerns that white checkmarks were challenging to distinguish from undelivered gray ones.
Earlier this year, WhatsApp expanded its personalization options, allowing both businesses and individual users to create custom chat themes with unique wallpapers and a palette of 38 different colors, solid backgrounds, doodles, or even uploaded images. While this feature was widely praised for adding a personal touch to conversations, it introduced an unintended usability issue.
To ensure readability, WhatsApp initially adjusted the color of read receipts - traditionally blue – to white in certain themes where the blue clashed with the message bubble colors. However, this change proved counterproductive. The subtle difference between grey (delivered) and white (read) checkmarks made it harder for users to quickly ascertain whether their messages had been seen.
“The intention was to improve visibility, but the result was ambiguity,” explains digital communication expert, Anya sharma. “The blue checkmark has become synonymous with ‘read’ in the WhatsApp ecosystem. Deviating from that established visual cue created friction for users.”
User feedback quickly highlighted the problem, with many requesting a return to the classic blue ticks. WhatsApp has responded, now testing an update that restores the blue read receipts regardless of the chosen chat theme. This ensures a consistent and easily understood system: grey for delivered, blue for read.
Currently, the update is limited to beta testers on both Android and iOS.WhatsApp is gathering feedback during this testing phase before a wider rollout. While an official release date hasn’t been announced, the company may expand access in the coming weeks if testing proves successful. It’s also possible WhatsApp could retain white receipts in specific cases to address accessibility concerns.
This seemingly small adjustment underscores WhatsApp’s commitment to user experience. By prioritizing clarity and responding to user feedback, the platform continues to refine its features, balancing personalization with intuitive functionality.
