West Ham Fight Back From 3-0 Down to 3-3 vs Cardiff in Parker’s Debut
“I came in here at nine o’clock this morning and met the players for the first time, so I didn’t have a lot of input as such,” said new West Ham manager Scott Parker following his side’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Cardiff City. Parker, who was confirmed as the replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo just 24 hours after his predecessor’s departure, saw his team erase a three-goal deficit in a chaotic second half.
A Clinical First Half for Cardiff
Cardiff dominated the opening proceedings, fueled by a hat-trick from Jack Moylan. The forward opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a 20-yard strike after being set up by Alex Robertson. The hosts doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Perry Ng curled a ball over a static West Ham defense, and Moylan soon extended the lead from the penalty spot after being fouled by Morato. By the 39th minute, Moylan completed his treble by heading in a Joel Bagan corner, leaving the visitors trailing 3-0 at the interval and prompting traveling fans to chant, “you’re not fit to wear the shirt.”
His opening strike found the top corner of Mads Hermansen’s net, and the treble took his tally to six goals in five games and 10 for the season. Moylan had slowed down to draw the penalty from Morato, and Cardiff had missed their previous two spot-kicks before he converted. Earlier, Taty Castellanos had forced Nathan Trott into an early save after a deflected Jarrod Bowen effort, while Hermansen tipped aside a Calum Scanlon cross before Will Fish headed over.
A Second-Half Revival
Parker’s half-time adjustments, including the introduction of Mohamadou Kante and Joel Piroe, sparked an immediate change in momentum. “As you can imagine, it was a difficult half-time talk,” Parker admitted. “I just helped them tactically and told them, ‘OK, this is the way it needs to be now.'”
The Hammers responded with a surge of energy led by captain Jarrod Bowen. The comeback began in the 58th minute when Divine Mukasa lifted a pass from Bowen over goalkeeper Nathan Trott. Seven minutes later, Arne Engels netted his first goal for the club after Piroe flicked on another Bowen delivery. The recovery was completed when Max Kilman converted a cross from Bowen to level the score. West Ham nearly secured a victory late in the game through substitutes Ezra Mayers and Tomas Soucek, but the match finished all square, leaving West Ham in eighth place.
Kante and Piroe replaced Soungoutou Magassa and Castellanos at half-time. Mukasa’s goal came off the post, and Kante nearly poked the ball past Trott before Kilman converted Bowen’s cross for the equaliser.

Managerial Reflections
“The first half was poor in many aspects,” Parker said. “We were very passive and slow with the ball. The biggest positive is the team we saw in the second half. They showed a lot of character and that pleased me the most.”
The result extends Cardiff’s unbeaten home league run to 10 games.
Parker added: “Certainly out of possession, we needed to be more aggressive.” He explained that tactical changes and substitutions made the side more front-footed, saying: “We took a few more risks.” “These boys have come off two defeats,” he added. I can only imagine what they were feeling.” Scott Parker’s West Ham tenure began with the eventful draw.”
