Wendell Sailor Arrested: Rugby League Star Faces Court Over Public Intoxication & Police Resistance
Former rugby league and rugby union international Wendell Sailor was arrested after allegedly becoming aggressive with police and resisting arrest, requiring nine officers to subdue him. The 51-year-vintage appeared in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, pleading guilty to failing to leave a premises after being excluded, intimidation, and resisting police.
The initial incident occurred at Pappy’s Bar in Sydney’s city centre on November 6, 2024, after 8:30 pm. According to agreed facts presented in court, Sailor became agitated while speaking with another man. When asked to leave the bar by management due to his intoxication, Sailor allegedly replied, “F***ing call the cops and see what happens,” and, “Do you know who I am? You’re f***ing done.”
Police were called to the scene and spoke with Sailor outside the bar. The situation escalated when he spotted the man he accused of attempting to fight him and gave chase, court documents state. Reinforcements were subsequently requested to assist in his arrest. Sailor maintained that his arrest was racially motivated.
Sailor had been granted bail with the condition that he not be intoxicated in public. However, on January 5, 2025, he allegedly violated this condition while at a sports bar in Wollongong. Police were called after reports of aggressive behavior towards a taxi driver. Officers found Sailor stumbling and swaying in the road, smelling strongly of alcohol and slurring his speech, according to the agreed facts.
As officers attempted to arrest Sailor, he allegedly tensed his arms to prevent the application of handcuffs and braced himself against a vehicle. Multiple officers were required to gain control of him. He continued to be aggressive and hostile while in custody.
Sailor’s lawyer has requested the court dismiss the charges on mental health grounds, citing information from a psychiatric report. A hearing on this application is scheduled for Friday. The court was previously informed that Sailor is undergoing a difficult separation from his wife of nearly three decades.
Sailor represented Australia in both rugby league and rugby union. He was a top try-scorer when the national rugby league side won the World Cup in 2000 and scored 13 tries in 37 games for the Wallabies, earning a place in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final. He concluded his 222-game NRL career in 2009 after playing nine seasons for the Brisbane Broncos and two for St George Illawarra.
