Welver Town Hall Responds to Critical Facade display Over Housing Rejection
WELVER, Germany – A house facade on Bahnhofstrasse in Welver is currently displaying a pointed critique of a recent municipal decision, featuring caricatures labeled “Grinse-Camillo” and “Bau-Mariechen” alongside the message: “Community Welver: No interest – Living space for 7 families rejected!” The display prompted a response from Welver’s Mayor, Camillo Garzen, regarding the rejected plans for a new row house advancement.
The controversy stems from a February town council meeting where a proposal to demolish an existing building and construct seven row houses was unanimously rejected. While additional housing was seen as positive, the proposed 70-meter plan was deemed unsuitable for the area.”It reminds you a little of carnival,” Mayor Garzen noted, referencing the tradition of satirical caricatures often used during parades. “But it is less funny - and especially not correct in terms of content.” He described the display as borderline but stated the administration would not “offer the topic of a further stage” by advertising a response.
The municipality had offered the property owner discussions regarding alternative plans, but communication devolved into critical email exchanges, culminating in the facade display. Garzen emphasized that the project could not proceed “at the expense of the community.”
“If we were in the middle of the carnival season, you might laugh at it,” Garzen said.”But a personal attack on an employee is not acceptable.” The town hall is now renewing its invitation to the property owner for a conversation, hoping to find a resolution “than a poster with little allegations against advice and administration.”
