WEF Could Appoint Christine Lagarde as Chair in November, Sources Say

WEF Could Appoint Christine Lagarde as Chair in November, Sources Say

October 15, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde could be appointed chair of the World Economic Forum as soon as November, a move that would require her to step down early and trigger a significant leadership reshuffle at Europe’s central monetary institution. Four people close to the organization told Reuters that the WEF board may choose its new leader during a scheduled November 2 meeting.

Board May Elect Lagarde as Chair in November

Lagarde’s current term at the ECB is officially scheduled to end in October 2027. However, the Board of Trustees, an entity that includes Lagarde herself among its 27 members, is set to convene on November 2 to potentially elect her as chair, according to the sources who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Two of those sources indicated the board might also establish a date for a formal vote. That timeline would allow Lagarde to appear as the designated chair during the annual meeting in January in Davos, where global political and business figures gather. A spokesperson for the WEF stated that the forum aims to hold a full board meeting before the end of the year, though exact dates could not be confirmed.

The board is currently co-chaired by BlackRock Chief Executive Larry Fink and Roche Vice Chairman Andre Hoffmann. Other prominent members include International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Jordan’s Queen Rania, Salesforce chief Marc Benioff, and Siemens executive Jim Hagemann Snabe. Lagarde has been attending the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, maintaining that she will remain at the ECB until next year without explicitly confirming whether she would serve out the remainder of her full term.

ECB Succession Planning Ahead of French Elections

An early departure by Lagarde would provide European Union leaders with a window to select a new ECB president before the conclusion of French President Emmanuel Macron’s term in May. EU officials harbor concerns that negotiations over succession could become more complex if far-right leader Marine Le Pen were to win the French presidential election projected for the spring.

According to a source cited by Reuters, Lagarde’s desire to ensure Macron retains a say in picking her successor heavily influenced the timing of the potential transition. The European Central Bank declined to comment on the matter.

Lagarde’s exit would create a second immediate vacancy on the ECB’s six-member Executive Board, following Isabel Schnabel’s resignation last month. Meanwhile, Chief Economist Philip Lane is scheduled to step down in May. EU officials indicate that the three senior appointments will likely be packaged into a single agreement among member states.

Frontrunners for the Central Bank Vacancies

Former central bank governors Klaas Knot of the Netherlands and Pablo Hernandez de Cos of Spain are viewed as frontrunners to assume the ECB presidency. Meanwhile, France is reportedly targeting the chief economist position currently held by Lane. Germany plans to put forward a candidate to replace Schnabel, who oversees the central bank’s market operations.

Whether Lagarde will secure the WEF post remains uncertain, and no final decisions have been formally adopted by the board. The ECB has not issued a public statement regarding the potential leadership transition, leaving markets to monitor upcoming political developments in Paris and Geneva.
