Waxahatchee & Brennan Wedl Cover Kathleen Edwards’ “Six O’Clock News” | Pitchfork
Nashville singer-songwriter Brennan Wedl has signed with ANTI- Records and released a cover of Kathleen Edwards’ 2002 song “Six O’Clock News,” featuring Waxahatchee, the musical project of Katie Crutchfield.
The collaboration, released on March 24, 2026, marks Wedl’s debut with her latest label and a shared admiration for Edwards’ work. “I first heard ‘Six O’Clock News’ on the Cities 97 Sampler CD around 2003,” Wedl stated. “There’s no doubt that this song shaped my songwriting voice. Originally written by Kathleen Edwards, ‘Six O’Clock News’ is a story about the hysteria of gun violence in an American town. To record and sing this extremely contemporary story with Waxahatchee over twenty years later is a direct link to the very heart of why I play music. It’s an honour to be joining the ANTI- roster and I’m ecstatic to share what we’ve been working on.”
Crutchfield echoed the sentiment, stating, “Brennan and I really bonded over our mutual love for Kathleen Edwards’s music. It’s such a powerful song with timeless appeal and I’m just thrilled to get to release our take on it.”
Edwards herself responded to the cover, expressing her appreciation for the new interpretation of her song. “I absolutely love this so much and am humbled that my song gets to live a new life with Katie and Brennan. 25 years ago, my audience looked a lot different than theirs does today – it’s incredibly cool to see young women love the songwriting that means so much to me, too.”
Wedl and Waxahatchee previously performed the cover in Nashville. The release of the studio version coincides with an upcoming North American tour where Wedl will open for Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman, beginning next month. The song addresses a 2002 incident involving a man killed in a police standoff, a theme Wedl identifies as remaining relevant in contemporary America.
Wedl’s signing to ANTI- Records follows her previous work with the microtonal jazz quartet Dazey & the Scouts. Waxahatchee’s most recent album was the subject of a 2024 Pitchfork cover story, titled “How Waxahatchee Made the Album of Her (Second) Life.”
