Warrior Football Set to Face New Haven in First DI Matchup
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – merrimack College football prepares for its first-ever Division I contest against the university of New Haven this Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Warriors and Chargers will meet for the first time as Merrimack‘s transition to DI in 2019,renewing a series that dates back over a decade.
While Merrimack holds a 3-7 overall record against New Haven, including wins in the last two games played in West Haven, this weekend’s matchup represents new territory. The teams last played in September 2018, a 44-18 UNH victory, before Merrimack began its ascent to the DI level. This game offers both programs a crucial opportunity to establish themselves within the Northeast Conference and build momentum as the season progresses.
the Merrimack offense is spearheaded by quarterback Ayden Pereira, who leads the team with 137 rushing attempts for 596 yards and four touchdowns. Pereira surpassed 1,000 career rushing yards against Maine. Running back DeMarcus McElroy has contributed 210 rushing yards, while Galamama Mulbah and Brendon Wyatt have each scored rushing touchdowns in the last two games, both with 20-yard runs.
Defensively, the Warriors are tied for fourth in the FCS with 11 interceptions, led by RJ Chapman’s four picks, including a standout performance against harvard. Senior linebacker Kendal Sims anchors the defense with a team-high 56 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles, adding a third fumble recovery last week against Colgate. DJ Frazier leads in solo tackles with 31 and is tied for first in the FCS with two blocked kicks. Merrimack’s defense is coming off a strong week, forcing two fumbles and an interception.
