Warren Buffett’s children prepare to manage $150 billion estate
Warren Buffett’s three adult children are preparing to manage a $150 billion philanthropic estate following a sudden shift in the billionaire investor’s succession plans, EL PAÍS reported.
Succession Shift Moves Fortune to Susie, Howard, and Peter Buffett
Warren Buffett, the 96-year-old chairman emeritus of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., holds a net worth of $150 billion, or roughly 133,000 million euros, according to EL PAÍS. He is the world’s tenth richest person. The investor has pledged to donate the vast majority of his wealth. Until recently, Bill Gates managed the disbursement of the majority of these funds through his foundation.
These entities include charitable foundations created by Warren Buffett that bear the names of each of his three children.
Diverging Philanthropic Visions Among the Heirs
Upon Warren Buffett’s death, any remaining assets will transfer entirely to his children, who must reach a unanimous agreement on how to distribute the funds. Elizabeth Dale, acting executive director at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy, noted in EL PAÍS that no historical precedent exists for a donation of this magnitude because no precedent exists for a fortune of this size. The siblings, who range in age from 68 to 73, currently pursue vastly different charitable interests without institutional alignment.

Susie Buffett focuses primarily on early childhood education in Omaha, supporting initiatives like centers for early childhood education, after-school programs and a science museum. Her offices are filled with posters, photos, and Squishmallows plush toys honoring her father. Howard Buffett concentrates heavily on global and domestic initiatives, having donated more than $1,200 million to Ukraine, alongside substantial funds directed toward the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Colombia. In Decatur, Illinois, Howard has used his father’s charitable funds to build a police training center featuring a theatrical set with a train, strobe lights, and speakers playing “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne. Peter Buffett directs his energy toward community projects, though he has previously expressed skepticism about the sheer scale of wealth concentrated in single family hands.
Peter Buffett’s Community Projects
In the Hudson Valley, north of New York City, Peter Buffett is using family funds to transform a former furniture factory into a modern community space. This project includes a manufacturing center and a library inspired by Harry Potter.
The Structural Burden of Distributing a Growing Estate
Despite distributing more than $70,000 million over the years, Warren Buffett’s net worth continues to expand rapidly, outpacing his historical philanthropic commitments. Aaron Horvath told EL PAÍS that even a well-intentioned billionaire cannot easily counter the economic forces continuously filling his bank accounts.
The siblings prefer to focus on a small number of trusted allies and motivating causes rather than making the large, unconditional grants used by MacKenzie Scott. Even Scott, the former wife of Amazon’s founder, possesses only a fraction of the resources available to Buffett. EL PAÍS noted that the siblings hope to distribute the entirety of the remaining wealth during their lifetimes, though Susie Buffett acknowledged that they have not yet determined whether to pool their resources or donate independently. Charlie Wells, Caroline Hepker, and Stephen Carroll discussed these succession challenges on Bloomberg Radio, emphasizing that the incoming administrators have yet to finalize their distribution strategy.
