Vondrousova Withdraws From US Open, Propelling Sabalenka to semifinals
NEW YORK - Marketa Vondrousova has withdrawn from the 2025 US Open semifinals due to a hip injury, advancing Aryna Sabalenka to the final four without a match. The declaration came Wednesday, abruptly ending Vondrousova’s remarkable run at the tournament and dashing hopes of a potential championship appearance just one year after undergoing surgery.
Vondrousova, currently ranked 60th in the world, has faced a persistent battle with injuries throughout her career.A left wrist injury sidelined her after Wimbledon in 2019 and again for six months in 2022, requiring surgery both times. More recently, she underwent shoulder surgery following Wimbledon 2024 and missed three months in 2025 due to another shoulder issue. She also withdrew from the 2024 Paris olympics with a hand injury and the 2025 Australian Open with a thigh injury. these setbacks have repeatedly interrupted her progress, despite reaching a career-high ranking of No.6. Vondrousova poignantly reflected on her journey, stating in an Instagram story, “Exactly one year ago I was in surgery, not even sure if I would ever return. Being back here, competing again and enjoying such gorgeous matches has meant more than words can say.”
Sabalenka will now face the winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinal match between No. 2 Iga Swiatek and No. 8 Amanda Anisimova, a rematch of last month’s Wimbledon final won by Swiatek 6-0, 6-0. The other semifinal will pit No. 11 Karolina Muchova against No.23 Naomi Osaka, who is competing in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal as winning her fourth major title at the 2021 Australian Open.
