Volvo Delays Key feature Activation for EX90 Electric SUV - Again
Stockholm, Sweden – Volvo has once again pushed back the activation date for several key features on its fully-electric EX90 SUV, leaving customers who purchased the vehicle over a year ago still waiting for promised functionality. The delay stems from ongoing technological challenges, despite the SUV already being in the hands of buyers.
The situation marks a continuation of a controversial strategy Volvo announced over a year ago, as reported in July 2024. The company began delivering the EX90 with certain functions disabled, promising activation via software updates within a year. This effectively turned early adopters into beta testers for features they had already paid for.
Originally slated for completion within twelve months of purchase, the activation is now indefinitely postponed. Volvo cites the unreadiness of underlying technologies as the reason for the further delay.
This decision represents a significant shift in the automotive industry, where selling vehicles with incomplete functionality was previously unthinkable. Historically, manufacturers would finalize growth and testing before releasing a product to market. Now, some are opting to release vehicles in an unfinished state, relying on owners to essentially serve as unpaid development engineers.
The EX90’s launch was already hampered by production delays, putting pressure on Volvo to begin deliveries even with known limitations. The ongoing delays in feature activation are likely to further frustrate customers who invested in the cutting-edge electric SUV.
