Vitoria-Gasteiz‘s Foronda Airport has expanded its reach with the launch of new Volotea flights to Madrid adn Barcelona, signaling a significant step toward a key passenger milestone. The airline initiated service to both Spanish capitals on Wednesday, November 6, 2025, anticipating further route expansion.
The new connections fulfill a long-held objective of the Provincial Council of Álava and the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, improving regional connectivity and positioning Foronda as a more viable travel hub. Officials predict the increased traffic will necessitate significant investment in airport infrastructure, particularly in expanding parking facilities and the terminal building to accommodate a projected 500,000 passengers – a figure initially targeted by the Provincial Council.”This brings us closer to the milestone of 500,000 passengers. It is a milestone sought from the beginning by the Provincial Council and that requires taking measures. A significant investment will have to be made in the parking so that it is larger and comparable to other airports and also in the terminal,” stated Ramiro González, deputy general of Álava.
Mayor of Vitoria, Maider Etxebarria, emphasized the importance of direct access to Madrid and Barcelona, stating the new routes “fulfill one of our objectives…and we also improve the connectivity of Foronda with the main international destinations through Madrid and Barcelona.”
Volotea’s expansion at Foronda aims to bolster the airport’s role in both domestic and international travel, offering increased convenience for residents of Álava and surrounding areas.
