Volkswagen launches ID. ERA 8X SUV with 1,300km WLTP range
Volkswagen launched the ID.
Vehicle Specifications and Extended-Range Powertrain Mechanics
The ID. ERA 8X measures 5.02 meters in length, nearly 2 meters in width, and features a 2.97-meter wheelbase. Inside the cabin, occupants have access to two 15.6-inch displays running at 2.5K resolution, door-integrated screens, a head-up display, Nappa leather, front-row massage seats, and a 12-liter refrigerator, according to Les Numériques.
Autoplus reported that the vehicle utilizes Extended Range Electric Vehicle technology, relying on a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 143 horsepower that functions exclusively as an onboard generator for the battery rather than driving the wheels directly. Single-motor and dual-motor configurations power the wheels, delivering system outputs of 295 or 503 horsepower according to Autoplus, while Les Numériques noted top variants reach up to 517 horsepower and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.
Buyers can select between a 51.1 kWh battery pack and a larger 65.2 kWh option. The 65.2 kWh battery delivers up to 451 kilometers of electric-only range under the Chinese CLTC testing standard, which corresponds to roughly 365 kilometers on the European WLTP cycle according to Autoplus. When combining a fully charged battery and a full fuel tank for the generator, the total official CLTC range reaches 1,602 kilometers, translating to approximately 1,300 kilometers on the WLTP cycle.

An 800-volt electrical architecture allows the vehicle to replenish its battery from 10 to 80 percent charge in 16 minutes. For driver assistance, the SUV integrates the Momenta R7 system, which relies on a 192-line LiDAR sensor alongside 26 peripheral sensors to manage highway cruising, urban driving, and parking maneuvers.
Pricing Structure and Competitive Pressures in the Chinese Market
Developed through the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture, the ID. ERA 8X lists for standard prices ranging between 226,800 and 269,800 yuan—equivalent to roughly 30,100 to 35,900 euros—though promotional launch pricing temporarily drops the entry-level cost to 206,800 yuan, or about 27,500 euros. Autoplus cited a slightly broader standard retail span of 226,800 to 289,800 yuan, equating to roughly 30,200 to 38,700 euros, with promotional pricing starting at 27,600 euros.
Wu Yun, general manager of SAIC Volkswagen, addressed the brand’s positioning amid fierce domestic competition from rivals such as BYD, Xpeng, Li Auto, and incoming models from Xiaomi. We participate in the price war, but not at the price of durable losses,
Yun stated regarding the aggressive pricing strategy.
Fabio Stoelzel, vice-president of SAIC Volkswagen Sales, noted that the joint venture compressed the development timeline for the ID. ERA 8X down to roughly two years. The development can go faster, but the validation cannot be reduced,
Stoelzel explained. Prototypes underwent testing surpassing one million kilometers and accumulated 25,000 hours on stationary test benches to evaluate component durability under controlled conditions.
Volkswagen Restricts ID. ERA 8X to Chinese Market
Despite the vehicle’s competitive pricing and extensive driving range, Volkswagen has confirmed no plans to market or commercialize the ID. ERA 8X in Europe. The model remains strictly restricted to consumers within the Chinese market as the German manufacturer attempts to reverse declining sales figures in the region.
