davao Vlogger⁢ Suspends Accounts Following “Halal Pork” Post Settlement

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews / september 11)‌ – Vlogger Crist⁢ Briand Oncada, known online as “Brader,”⁢ will ‍suspend all his social media accounts for one ‍month as part of a settlement agreement with the National‍ Commission on⁤ Muslim‌ Filipinos (NCMF)-Davao Region and the Davao City government.

The agreement, brokered through the davao City Muslim Affairs Office, stemmed from a now-deleted post by⁢ Oncada referencing “halal pork,” which sparked widespread criticism from Muslim groups ⁣and individuals.‌ pork and ⁣its by-products ‌are ⁢considered ⁢ haram, or forbidden, in Islam.

The⁢ settlement was formally signed⁣ on September 10 at ‍the NCMF⁣ regional office in Davao City, following a show-cause order issued by the NCMF ⁢days‌ prior regarding the “offensive and misleading” post.

Beyond⁢ the social media⁢ suspension, Oncada will also weekly repost his apology online, undergo psychiatric consultations alongside his mother, and participate in ⁤community service focused⁢ on peace advocacy ⁣and cultural immersion. He further pledged to‌ adhere to Davao City’s discipline campaign and⁤ refrain from similar‌ actions⁣ in⁤ the future.

Oncada publicly apologized in a video recorded at the NCMF office and posted to the agency’s Facebook page on September 10. ⁤”I sincerely apologize ⁣for the post I made, which offended members of the Muslim community. I understand that my⁢ words and actions were inappropriate and caused pain. ⁤I⁣ take⁤ full⁤ responsibility,” he stated, reading from a prepared ‌statement. A separate apology video was also uploaded to his personal Facebook page the same day.

This is not ⁢the⁣ first time Oncada, who has a considerable online following, ‌has faced scrutiny for‌ potentially offensive content.‍ The Bangsamoro Youth ‍Commission addressed the issue in a September 3 Facebook post, ⁣highlighting the ⁤responsibility of⁢ content creators to accurately represent religious beliefs. “the idea of ‘baboy⁣ na halal’ is without basis, false and misleading, and is rightly seen as ‍offensive and disrespectful to the religious beliefs and cultural ⁢sensitivities of⁣ the Muslim ⁤community,” the commission stated.

NCMF-Davao Regional Director Sherrila Porza-Sawah emphasized the ‌broader goals of the settlement, stating, “This settlement is⁣ not only about addressing an offense, but also about building bridges of respect and understanding within our diverse communities.”

The NCMF and the davao City government will monitor Oncada’s compliance with the agreement while continuing existing programs⁣ aimed at fostering⁢ peace and interfaith harmony. (Guia A. rebollido/MindaNews)
