Visit Norway Responds To Donald Trump Insult With Restrooms
Donald Trump insults Norway during a Michigan campaign rally
Frustrated by not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, United States Donald Trump called Norway a “shithouse” country during an electoral meeting in Michigan on Sunday, October 25, 2026, franceinfo reported.
The remark followed the awarding of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in early October to South African Navi Pillay for her career as a jurist combating atrocities in Rwanda and the Middle East. Speaking to his supporters, Trump explained his frustration directly: “Frankly, Norway sucks. In fact, Norway has become a shithouse country.” He also suggested that Norwegian immigrants were no longer welcome in the United States, stating, “I don’t want Norwegians. I don’t want to have anything to do with Norway.”
This is not the first time the American president has used the term. In 2018, Trump applied the same expression to Haiti, El Salvador, and several African nations, franceinfo recalled.
Visit Norway responds by promoting spectacular public toilets
The tourist promotion agency Visit Norway answered the insult with humor early in the week by highlighting the country’s public restrooms, franceinfo reported. The agency noted that it had heard a lot about the “shithouse” designation and countered that Norway genuinely possesses some of the most spectacular toilets in the world.
Visit Norway launched a dedicated website showcasing public facilities along Norwegian roads, including spots in Bergen and along the fjords. The promotional material features highly designed restrooms with breathtaking panoramic views, such as the “Golden Toilet” on the island of Senja and the “Hobbit Toilet” in Hardanger, according to franceinfo. A video accompanying the campaign showcases these structures amid picturesque landscapes.

A Norwegian outdoor activities association joined the response by publishing a video of scenic landscapes accompanied by the sarcastic comment: “This is just us, living in our shit country,” franceinfo stated.
Norwegian foreign minister clarifies Nobel committee independence
Speaking with greater sobriety, Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide addressed the controversy by emphasizing the independence of the Nobel Committee, franceinfo reported. Speaking on the broadcaster NRK, Eide stressed that the president of the United States “knows very well” that the committee is independent from the government, adding that Norwegian authorities have reminded him of this fact.
After Donald Trump insulted Norway, Visit Norway refreshed an old page about its scenic public toilets: Norway makes restrooms 'great again!' Views ran more than 540 times the week before. https://t.co/12ZHaxQLh0
