Visit Angostura Recreation Area: A Hidden Gem in South Dakota's Black Hills

Visit Angostura Recreation Area: A Hidden Gem in South Dakota’s Black Hills

October 28, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Travelers seeking summer warmth near the Wyoming border will find 36 miles of shoreline and sandy beaches at South Dakota’s Angostura Reservoir, a 4,612-acre artificial lake built in 1949 that supports swimming, boating, and walleye fishing.

Angostura Reservoir Expands Black Hills Recreation Options

While many visitors to the southwestern side of South Dakota flock to Badlands or Wind Cave National Park, the Black Hills region also hosts quieter outdoor recreation areas. Built in 1949 by the Angostura Dam, the Angostura Reservoir reaches depths of up to 75 feet. The artificial lake serves practical agricultural and flood control purposes, but its crystal-clear waters now host the Angostura Recreation Area. Open daily for a small fee, the park supports lake activities ranging from swimming to waterskiing.

“My absolute favorite lake in South Dakota! Almost all sand beaches, warmer water, great boating, and walleye fishing,” a Google user said.

For visitors preferring a break from the water, the area offers hiking, biking, disc golf, volleyball, horseshoes, picnicking, and birdwatching. Hunting is permitted in the cooler months from October to April. Located near Hot Springs, South Dakota, the recreation area serves as a stop on a Black Hills road trip. Travelers flying to the region typically land at Rapid City Regional Airport, situated an hour north of the site.

Beaches and Boating Facilities at the Reservoir

Visitors can access dedicated swimming and sunbathing zones at Hobie Beach and Cascade Campground. For dining, Inferno on the Beach operates as a lakeside pizza restaurant next to Breaker’s Beach.

A full-service marina and multiple boat ramps support boating and tubing. “A very good lake for boating, tubing, and doing pretty much every water sport that exists. The water’s clean and clear and you can see fish swimming in it. There are also good sandy beaches,” a past visitor shared on Google Maps.

The freshwater reservoir is stocked with fish species including bass, perch, crappie, bluegill, and northern pike, alongside walleye.

Angostura Reservoir Offers Diverse Camping and Trail Options

The recreation area provides electric, non-electric, and tent-only camping across four lakeside campgrounds: Cheyenne Campground, Cascade Campground, Hat Creek Campground, and Horsehead Campground. The site features 171 individual campsites and 14 camping cabins equipped with restrooms, showers, vault toilets, and playgrounds. Hat Creek Campground sits closest to fishing and boating spots, while Cheyenne Campground houses the park’s only dump station. Visitors can reserve campsites in advance online at the official Angostura Reservoir page.

Hikers and bikers utilize trails such as the Reservoir View Bike Trail, a nearly 10-mile out-and-back route alongside the reservoir banks. The location provides road-trip access to Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands.

Aberdeen features camping and swimming at Mina Lake and Richmond Lake, while Custer State Park hosts Sylvan Lake and Stockade Lake. Central South Dakota features the Missouri River reservoirs of Lakes Oahe, Sharpe, Francis Case, and Lewis and Clark.
