Villawood Assault: Airport Transfer Arrest

A man who allegedly stabbed one man and assaulted another as he was being transported from Villawood detention centre to Sydney Airport has been arrested.

Police have also charged a woman with knowingly harbouring, maintaining or employing an escaped inmate.

Cumberland police were called to James Ruse Drive about 3.40am on Thursday following reports that a 54-year-old man had been stabbed in the neck and cheek and a 36-year-old man had been assaulted.

Police will allege the men were transporting a 28-year-old Tongan man who fled following the alleged attack. Strike Force Cobra was launched to locate the man.

About 9.40pm on Friday, officers attached to Campbelltown Police Area Command were called to Eschol Park in south-west Sydney following reports the man was there.

A short time later, he was arrested on Ballantrae Drive in nearby St Andrews and was taken to Campbelltown police station.

The woman, aged 24, was also arrested at the scene and taken to the police station.

The man has been charged with causing wounding/grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

The woman was granted conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court next Thursday.
