Victor Coyote, Founder of Los Coyotes and Spanish Music Legend, Dies at 68

August 14, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Víctor Aparicio Abundancia, known to Spain’s cultural sphere as Víctor Coyote, died at age 68 following a sudden bicycle accident near Segovia. The multidisciplinary artist, musician, illustrator, and writer leaves behind an indelible mark as the founder of Los Coyotes and a pioneer of Latin rock in Spain.

From Tui to Madrid: Founding Los Coyotes

Born in Tui, Pontevedra in 1958, Víctor Coyote relocated to Madrid during the late 1970s to study fine arts. He established Los Coyotes in 1979. The group initially anchored the local punkabilly sound before shifting toward Latin rhythms in the mid-1980s.

Reporting by ABC notes that the group’s foundational releases included the 1982 EP Extraño corte de pelo and the 1985 landmark LP Mujer y sentimiento. Rather than fitting neatly into the commercial molds of Madrid’s iconic cultural movement, the Movida, Coyote carved an independent path. He blended genres ranging from electronic music to traditional Iberian and Latin American styles.

A Prolific Visual Artist and Cartoonist

Beyond his musical output, Coyote maintained a prolific career as a visual artist, graphic designer, and comic creator. His illustrations appeared in prominent publications, including the magazine Madriz. He also designed album covers for various acts, created theatrical vignettes, and produced documentary shorts concerning the Miño River’s border region.

Manel Cráneo, director of the international comic festival Viñetas desde o Atlántico, expressed shock to Cadena SER regarding the sudden loss. He described Coyote as an advanced artist of immense humility and a foundational figure in Spanish comic arts and 1980s music.

The Eclipse Trip and Tragic Accident

According to details confirmed by Cadena SER and ABC, Coyote had traveled to Segovia to view an eclipse. Emergency services received an alert from Marugán after he was found semi-inconscient beside a bicycle. Preliminary indications pointed toward a traffic accident, fall, or sudden faint.
