Pokémon GO Explorer Gadget: How to Get and Use the New Auto-Catch Item
The Explorer Gadget in Pokémon Go is a new key item that automates catching Pokémon and spinning PokéStops while the app is closed, rolling out globally. According to reports from MeinMMO and Insider Gaming, developer Scopely is gradually distributing the tool to players, limiting daily usage based on individual trainer levels.
How the Explorer Gadget Works in Pokémon Go
The mechanism behind the Explorer Gadget diverges significantly from traditional active play loops and existing passive tools like the Daily Adventure Incense. According to coverage from MeinMMO, players can activate the item once a day directly from the overworld map interface located above the Daily Adventure Incense. Once triggered, the app must be closed entirely for the gadget to function. As the player moves around in the real world, the item automatically registers catches and collects items in the background, provided the trainer has sufficient storage space available in their item bag.
Data detailed by Insider Gaming notes that the gadget functions similarly to physical Bluetooth accessories like the Pokémon GO Plus or GO Plus+. However, unlike those physical peripherals which require an active connection while the application runs in the background, the Explorer Gadget specifically requires the game to be shut down. Testing indicates that the feature remains inactive if the game app stays open on a device’s screen.
Rollout Strategy and Level-Based Limitations
The distribution of the Explorer Gadget has not happened all at once. According to Insider Gaming, Scopely is employing a randomized rollout strategy, gradually expanding access across different regions and player accounts over recent weeks. There is currently no guaranteed manual method to unlock the item; eligible accounts receive it automatically as server-side activations continue to scale.

Once acquired, the utility of the gadget scales directly with a trainer’s progression. MeinMMO reports that the daily cap for automatic catches and item collections corresponds directly to the player’s level. For example, a trainer at level 65 can harvest up to 65 combined Pokémon and items daily through the automated tool.
