Leclerc: Verstappen Outperforming McLaren in title Fight
BAKU, azerbaijan – Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc believes Max Verstappen is currently exceeding the performance level of McLaren’s Oscar piastri in the Formula 1 World Championship battle. Despite Red Bull’s recent struggles, including a difficult Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen has secured victories in Monza and Baku, capitalizing on McLaren’s recent setbacks.
Leclerc’s assessment comes as Verstappen trails championship leader Piastri by 69 points (255 to 324) wiht several races remaining. The Ferrari driver acknowledged Red Bull’s improvements, stating to Motorsport.com, “I don’t think Max will leave something, that is certain. I think they have taken a big step forward with the car and that they are now also at a very strong level.” This statement underscores the intensifying competition at the top of the standings and the pressure on Piastri to maintain his lead.
While recognizing McLaren as a formidable opponent, Leclerc highlighted Verstappen’s current edge. “McLaren has not had a very flexible weekend here, not the last two racing weekends, so I don’t think Red Bull is suddenly dominating again,” he explained. “I think it is very close together between McLaren and Red Bull, but Max is doing a little better at the moment.”
The arrival of new Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies is expected to further bolster the team’s performance as the season progresses. The championship outcome remains uncertain, but Leclerc’s comments suggest Verstappen is poised to mount a serious challenge to Piastri’s lead.
